The homeopathic consultation

WHY HOMEOPATHY?

During the first consultation, your homeopath will ask lots of questions to build up a complete picture; taking into account a wide variety of factors such as your medical history, personality traits, stress triggers, likes and dislikes, lifestyle and even your dreams.Your homeopath wants to understand what is unique about you, and how your body and mind express themselves. Because homeopathy looks at the whole picture, patients who have the same diagnosed illness – hay fever or IBS, for example – are each likely to need different homeopathic medicines, depending on their unique expression of the illness. This first consultation will usually takes about an hour, sometimes a little more, depending on the complexity of your case history. You will be asked many questions and some of them will seem strange for those not used to homeopathy. The practitioner is building up a picture of your unique make up, a bit like putting together a jigsaw puzzle.

Follow-up appointments

Homeopathic treatments involve a gradual process of change towards better health. The first follow-up is usually between 2-4 weeks after the first prescription, although in some cases it may be sooner.

The second session tends to be shorter than the first – usually between half an hour and an hour. Your homeopath will ask about changes that have occurred, using their detailed notes as a reference point, before deciding on the next step in your treatment.

The number of consultations that may be needed is difficult to predict; It depends on a number of factors such as how long you have suffered from the condition, your general level of health, and your response to the first prescription. Long standing chronic, or deep seated conditions will take longer to improve than more recent superficial conditions. In most cases you will know if the treatment is going in the right direction within a few weeks. In some cases there is improvement within hours or days of starting treatment.
Your homeopath will be able to to give you a better idea of what you can expect to happen after your first consultation when he has assessed your individual case history.

What about seeing my doctor?

We always recommended that you maintain your relationship with your GP or specialist. Homeopathic and conventional approaches are often successfully used alongside one another in an integrated approach.

Homeopathic remedies, which are non-toxic, will not interfere with the action of conventional drugs. Nevertheless, it’s important to keep your homeopath informed of any changes in prescribed medication from your doctor, and to keep your doctor informed of any changes in symptoms for which you have been prescribed conventional medicines.

Some people choose homeopathy because they are unhappy with side effects from their current conventional medication. However, you should not stop medication until you have discussed it with your prescribing doctor. It can be dangerous to suddenly stop taking prescribed conventional medicines.

Children

Although parents might opt for pharmaceutical drugs for their own health issues, they are often reluctant to dose their children with chemicals. Homeopathy is a good alternative for many health conditions commonly seen in children and teenagers. Childhood is the time when the foundations of our future health are laid, so it is a good time to begin using homeopathy.

Here follows a partial list of conditions for which parents bring their children to homeopathic treatment :

  • Acne
  • ADD/ADHD
  • Anxiety
  • Asthma
  • Bed-wetting
  • Constipation
  • Developmental problems
  • Eating disorders
  • Low confidence, bullying
  • Nightmares
  • Recurrent infections
  • Skin conditions such as eczema, acne, psoriasis, impetigo
  • Sleep problems
